After experiencing several illnesses and deaths of my close family, I was compelled to explore the physical body from a new perspective: that of aging and deterioration to try to understand the remarkable but sometimes fickle nature of the human body.  Extraordinary and beautiful on the one hand, with its ability to adapt to circumstance, we can forget how delicate and mortal the body is. I became intrigued by the reality of it giving way at any moment to suddenly transform our definitions of reality and perceptions of who we are. The bodies in these self-portraits may appear broken or incomplete, but I feel this allusion to fragility speaks to vulnerability as a strength, in all its forms.
